Bunran "Bunny" Latif is a former general in the Pakistani army and the head of the ISI.

Biography[]

He is an old friend and colleague of Saul's who has since developed a deep animosity for the United States due to their foreign policy decisions post-9/11.

Season 4[]

Bunny Latif is a former general who now works for the Pakistani intelligence service ISI and still maintains good contacts with Saul Berenson. He believes that the September 11, 2001 attacks were just a hoax designed to give Americans a reason to launch a crusade against the Islamic world.

The two meet at Saul's request, and Saul asks Latif to set him up with a member of the ISI he trusts and can talk to. However, Latif replies that no one can be trusted to run ISI at this time and urges Saul to drop his request, even as Saul reminds him that he still owes him a favor or two. Nevertheless, he eventually arranges for him to meet Aasar Khan.

Later, when Saul was kidnapped by Haissam Haqqani, Latif was part of a delegation that was supposed to discuss how to proceed with the Americans. When Ambassador Martha Boyd asks him about the Pakistani government's relations with the Taliban, he admits that while they have occasional contacts with the Taliban, they are not providing them with information or weapons, but instead are trying to get them out of Pakistan to get.

Latif was taken aback when Andrew Lockhart told him that both the Pakistani military and the ISI turned a blind eye to the kidnapping. Latif then wants to end talks with the Americans, but Lockhart threatens that the aid package that Pakistan is still receiving from the United States will then have to be reconsidered.

At the next meeting between the Americans and the Pakistanis, they are shown a video commissioned by Haqqani showing that Saul is still alive. There, everyone learns that Haqqani demands the release of several prisoners in exchange for Saul.

Latif is forced to give in to Haqqani's demands and eventually organizes the prisoner exchange. As Carrie Mathison speaks to Aasar Khan, he shares the details of the exchange with her deputy, John Redmond. After the successful exchange, he returns to the city with the others.

Season 8[]

Years later, Latif passes on leadership of the ISI to his stepdaughter, Tasneem Qureishi, who proved instrumental in helping the Taliban initially succeed.

Mistake[]

Factual error: The Pakistan Army uses British-style rank insignia with the crown replaced with The Star and crescent of Pakistan. The ISI officers are all wearing another badge instead of The Star and crescent. They are also wearing black gorget (collar) patches, whereas they should be wearing scarlet. Lt Col Khan and a number of other more junior officers should not be wearing gorget patches at all, as they are restricted to full colonels and above. ISI officers do not have a separate uniform; they wear ordinary military uniform if they are entitled to it.
